Who is it for?


This module is for construction professionals including design managers and design teams, directors, senior managers, project managers, site managers, foremen, works managers and site engineers, purchasers and quantity surveyors or anyone who leads a team who will be affected by the implementation of digital solutions.

Prerequisites


This eLearning module assumes that you have an appreciation of digital solutions used in a construction context. If you don’t have recent construction site experience or a working knowledge of BIM, digital models and other digital construction tools we recommend you complete the following free eLearning modules before you continue:

What does this module cover?


This course alerts you to the potential legal and contractual pitfalls of digital construction tools and describes how to prevent them becoming problems for you, your organisation and your clients. It will help you consider the legal and contractual aspects of digital construction tools in terms of:


  • How you engage with suppliers of digital technology, and
  • How the use of digital tools during the construction phase impacts on your construction contract and your legal obligations as an employer. 


By the end of the course you will be able to:


  • Outline key Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) considerations when using digital technology
  • Explain how ownership of data within digital models works
  • Consider the relationship between digital tools and different types of insurance
  • List the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) considerations of digital solutions
  • Describe how cyber security impacts on digital tools
  • List the benefits and risks of cloud-based solutions
  • List valid forms of digital signatures and binding methods of communication
  • Consider the legal implications of 3D printing and virtual reality tools.
