Introduction from Peter

Peter Roberts, Topcon Positioning GB Ltd

I joined Topcon in 2002 as a Technical Support Adviser. I found my previous site experience invaluable as it allowed me to connect with the customer since, as the saying goes, “I’ve been there and got the T-shirt!”

Tech Support can often be a thankless task; sometimes you feel like a walking technical manual. There is a more rewarding side, however: when a customer rings back to say “thank you!” or when you see the customer having a “light bulb moment” where they grasp a concept or technique during a training session which will save hours of toil. In Support, patience is a virtue!

I’m happy to be able to support Industry Partners through the DTL project as I’ve witnessed the transformation for myself. Back in the day, on the M6 Toll, although the weekly measure took place on a Friday, traditional workflows meant that decisions based on that data were made almost a week later. Now with Machine Control technology and telematics, informed decisions can be made extremely quickly.

For me, supporting DTL is about trying to help people overcome their fear of technology by making it simple to understand and by showing the tangible benefits that adoption can bring – which in most cases means “the bottom line.”

The UK is way behind some parts of Europe in the adoption of digital technologies in the construction industry and we need to approach it from both ends of the spectrum – the eager student and the seasoned “old-hand.” It is my hope that, together with other Expert and Industry partners, we have the skill set and passion to drive this through.
