Introduction from Alan
I moved into technical support and sales of surveying equipment after starting my career as a site engineer. My hands-on experience of the construction industry meant I was able to help people with their technical problems from the point of view of someone who had been in their shoes. My technical support role allowed me to develop my powers of explanation, so moving into a training role was a natural next step for me especially since I have an understanding for the fundamental principles of setting out and surveying.
I’m captivated by the pace at which technology is moving and love being able to get my head round new technologies as they appear on the market so I can then pass that learning onto the people who can get the most benefit from them. I get so much satisfaction from being able to help people solve problems, both simple and complex. I think it helps that I’ve been there myself and I understand the construction process and the commercial aspects of Civil Engineering. I enjoy working with Constructionarium Scotland, helping college and university students to get practical experience of the construction process.
I’m happy to be able to support Industry Partners through the DTL project. My expertise spans the full range of surveying equipment and includes Total Station, GNSS, scanning technology, Machine Control and Ground Penetrating Radar. I can help companies quantify the potential ROI of different digital surveying solutions and work with them to put together a business case for various equipment, software and associated training.
